The redundant pressure vessels were sited within a top tier COMAH Site in live project areas with services carrying EDC and Chlorine. Initial preparation works involved removal of pipe ranges and associated steam/vapour loops and valves using cold cut methods, lifting undertaken using a 60t mobile crane. Hydraulic/air driven enerpacs were used to remove flange bolts. All pipe joints/valves contained asbestos gaskets which where removed by our in-house Asbestos Division.
On completion of ancillary removal, access platforms, walkways and landings were detached. Working from independent scaffold, cold cutting techniques were adopted by way of reciprocating air saws. Craneage operations for enabling work was planned and managed by Ron Hull Demolition Ltd on a crane hire basis.
Removal of the vessels was undertaken during an 8 day shut down period, a 500t mobile crane could only be sited at 37m radius - which meant the vessels had to be lifted over the main site service gantry which houses a chlorine supply.
The 4 No. vessels were lifted out individually using the 500t mobile crane in unison with a 100t tailing crane, this assisted to transfer the vessels from a vertical to horizontal plane to enable loading on to step frame trailers.
The units were transported to the Ron Hull Group's Waste Transfer Station at Rotherham for secondary decontamination and processing to enable scrap metal recycling.
The project was completed to the Client's satisfaction within programme, and without incident.
