Project: Removal of Goose Hole Overbridge
Client: TATA Steel - Scunthorpe Works
Location: Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire
Date: April 2011

Ron Hull Demolition Ltd continued their close working relationship with Tata Steel when they were asked to demolish Goose Hole Bridge, located on the Tata Steel Scunthorpe site. The bridge spanned 27 meters over Burma Road - a main arterial road through the site.

RHDL and Tata worked closely together to ensure that all preliminaries to include road closures, permits and the isolation of services were in place prior to the start of the works. All works were carried out within close proximity to a live overhead 48" diameter gas main.

The bridge was supported on reinforced concrete abutment walls and weighed in excess of 137 tonnes. The work was completed during 2 separate weekend periods where the bridge was safely craned down to ground floor level in 2 individual lifts.

Working closely with our client, RHDL's appointed person developed the lifting plan taking into consideration all site conditions and the risk assessments previously carried out. RHDL trained and experienced site team consisting of the lift supervisor, slingers/signallers and banksmen ensured that the works were carried out safely in accordance with current legislative requirements.

Weekend 1 included the removal of the reinforced concrete deck and the preparation for the lift which included the cutting of slinging holes and the separation of the bridge. On weekend 2, a 220t mobile crane was rigged below the bridge and fitted with full ballast (71te). The bridge sections were lifted out using spreader beam/wire rope sling arrangements and lowered to ground on the adjacent sidings.

The site was handed back to the client well in front of programme, to the client's delight and more importantly without incident.
